Xgl for the win [17 May 2006|05:13am] [ music | faraquet ] I just got Xgl running with the new version of SuSE. It's verrrry pretttty and hands down beats the shit out of Mac OS X and Vista combined. Here's a quick demo video I made: http://harp.njit.edu/~ams23/temp/xgl.avi Sorry for the low res. I promise you it's even prettier in person. A while ago I tested a beta version of Windows Vista on this same machine and it lagged like all hell. All the wannabe Mac OS X effects looked choppy and visibly brought the system to its knees. Now, granted, it was a leaked beta I was testing, but I really don't suspect any major performance enhancements in the release version. On the other hand, Xgl, which is nothing short of stunning, seems to be running fine on this 6 year old machine. 2 comments|post comment

I'm a consumer whore [03 Sep 2005|11:26am] [ music | l'altra ] I had a talk with my mom this morning. She says I need to make a change. She says I need more order in my life, particularly with sleep. Then she pried about my social life, successfully dredging up some crap that's been bothering me lately. I haven't even really sorted out why I'm down. Anyway, my ma knows me well. I got a mountain bike. I'm going to go bicycling for exercise. I'm so out of shape. I know I've posted about this before, but this COULD BE IT. Hopefully, I'll get into a regular groove with biking. This would improve my sleep schedule as well as my skin. I'm sick of having pimples. I wouldn't mind it if my penis was still growing, but cmon... I'm 21. Anyway, I went for a bike ride at 4am last night and fell asleep when I got home -- worked as I intended. I also have a new laptop on the way. 12" screen & 1.8ghz AMD Turion CPU & 1gb RAM. I finally found a dealer that didn't force me into buying a copy of Windows. (Actually, the day AFTER I ordered, they issued a new counter-piracy policy that removed the "No operating system" option.) The HP tablet I've been using for the past year or so just isn't me. I plan on returning the tablet back to the professor. The fall semester has started. I already slept through a class, which is really bothering me. I hate doing shit like that. Three out of the 5 courses I'm taking this semester are humanities courses. I fear this semester will require more effort than past ones. 9 comments|post comment

Power inverter too fat [12 Jul 2005|10:34am] The power inverter finally arrived today. I ripped open the package and ran out to my car wearing only boxers with intent to try out my new toy. When I tried to plug it in, I realized there was going to be a problem because the cigarette lighter is set in about an inch, and the car interior surrounds it. The power inverter was too fat to actually reach the jack, so I won't be able to use it without modding either the cigarette lighter or the power inverter itself. I took apart both the cigarette jack / ashtray port thing in my car and the power inverter and tried several different configurations -- nothing worked out. Soap in the eye [19 Jun 2005|12:05am] I got soap in my left eye in the shower this morning. It wasn't like a little bit of soapy water; it must have been a CHUNK of Dove soap. The sting was so great that I couldn't finish my shower. Any movement at all of my left eyeball felt like razor blades. It went away after a couple hours. Then I went to a Yankee game with my family. It was actually a lot of fun. I think it's because in the past I've had upperdeck seats. This time we had bleacher seats. Fans in the bleachers tend to be a bit whackier.
